About Linda

Professional Background

I have extensive experience working with people dealing with depression and anxiety, as well as other mental health issues. I have worked in both community and employee assistance programs, and I provided therapy myself, but also supervised other therapists. I have worked with persons with a wide range of issues, ages, and cultures. I currently work full time in private practice delivering services in both private homes and in an office at the Village Healing Centre.

More recently, I have been specializing in end of life issues related to death, dying, and loss. I host Death Cafes (www.deathcafe.com) and encourage everyone to talk more openly about their inevitable deaths. I am a Buddhist Lay Chaplain as well as a social worker. I have been volunteering at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre with individuals and families facing cancer issues and as a Resident and Family Care Provider at Kensington Hospice for persons in their final weeks and months of life. I have completed studies in Thanatology and Palliative Care, and am involved with setting up the Buddhist Education Network of Ontario for Buddhist palliative care.

Social Work Standards

I earned a Masters Degree in Social Work (MSW) from the University of Toronto in 1993. I am a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and my number is #807353. I am also a member and have liability insurance with the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW). I abide by all policies and standards pertaining to social workers in the province of Ontario.

Specifically, I follow the principles of confidentiality with clients, and only breach confidentiality if I am concerned that someone is at risk of harm to themselves or to someone else. I respect the neutrality of the therapeutic relationship, and do not get involved with third party requests for diagnoses or prognoses. I adhere to PIPEDA legislation and follow all guidelines for respecting privacy of clinical notes and client personal information.

Policies

I provide a confidential cellphone number and email address to clients to be used for booking appointments. I encourage clients to book appointments at our sessions, but am available to reschedule between sessions.

Each session is generally 50 minutes for counselling, A session begins at the time of the booked appointment, not when the client arrives, in case of lateness. Payment of fees and scheduling the next appointment occurs briefly immediately after this.

I allow for cancelling of sessions, without penalty, provided more than 24 hours notice is provided. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice require full payment at the next session.

There are numerous accepted forms of payment: Cash, Cheque, Mastercard, Visa, American Express, etransfer. Full payment must be provided at the end of each session. A receipt can be provided upon request.

Note: Many insurance plans cover these services under psychological services with a registered social worker. It is the individual’s responsibility to check with their company (Human Resources Department) to determine whether these services are covered for them or not.
